This year, DSi has been part of the Guideline Development Group involved in the creation of a new UK health guideline Thyroid Disorder in Children and Young People with Down Syndrome - Surveillance and When to Initiate Treatment, developed by Down Syndrome Medical Interest Group UK and Ireland (DSMIG UK).

A comprehensive process including both expert and key stakeholder input, a systematic review of the evidence, and robust recommendations was used to develop these guidelines, which are much needed to bring clarity for healthcare professionals in the UK working with children and young people with Down syndrome.

The guidelines were published in April 2020 and are available online:

They have been endorsed by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (UK), the Royal College General Practitioners (UK), the Royal College of Nursing (UK), the Down's Syndrome Association (England, Wales, and Northern Ireland), and Down’s Syndrome Scotland.

We hope that they will be a useful resource for medical professionals and improve the care and treatment of children and young people with Down syndrome with thyroid disorder.
