We are delighted to learn that Robert Martin has received a knighthood in the New Years Honors list for services to people with disabilities.

Sir Robert joined us at the United Nations in Geneva 2019 for World Down Syndrome Day where he spoke about the rights of people with disabilities to work on the theme "Leave No One Behind".

Sir Robert Martin is a disbility rights activist from New Zealand who has promoted the self advocacy movement internationally and was involved in the proceedings resulting in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). He is also the first person with an intellectual disability to sit on the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the body of independent experts which monitors implementation of the UN CRPD by UN Member States.

Sir Robert said he was both proud and humbled to receive a knighthood for services to people with disabilities.

"I couldn't have got where I've got to without the assistance and also the support I've received over the many years from other people with learning disabilities."

Congratulations Sir Robert!!
